(Alpha-Zone) Many Americans and lawmakers are worried about the exposure large corporations have to subprime mortgages and mortgage securities. This problem is dwarfed by their exposure to derivatives. The value of these derivatives can be more than the assets of the company.
Over 90 percent of derivatives are traded outside of the regulated exchanges. Most companies keep their holdings off the balance sheet or may include their holdings in the footnotes of their financial statements. As a result, most investors are unaware of the risk. Even if a brokerage firm is not private, it may be difficult to pull the numbers.

(Alpha Zone News) “Tropic Thunder” was the winner at the box office again this weekend raking in another $14.3 million, including Labor Day Monday (see trailers below). The comedy stars Robert Downy Jr, Jack Black, Brandon T. Jackson and Ben Stiller as a group of actors placed in real combat after failing to produce a movie on time and on budget.
The second place winner was the Vin Diesel film “Babylon A.D.” which grossed more than $12 million. Vin Diesel plays a mercenary who has the task of delivering a woman from Central Asia to New York City. The assignment seemed easy, until he learned that others were after the woman, and more the twins inside her.
(Alpha Zone News) Gustav will be bearing down on New Orleans this morning. Just three years ago Hurricane Katrina struck the coast causing one the nation’s largest national disasters. The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for the Louisiana coast. This means citizens can expect hurricane force winds and rain within 24 hours.
